Rural organisations are urging regional households to review their emergency contact preparedness, warning gaps in understanding communications systems can delay critical help.
The reminder is being spearheaded by Better Internet for Rural, Regional and Remote Australia and the Country Women’s Association of New South Wales, who say many families remain unclear about how to contact emergency services in areas with limited or no mobile coverage, particularly where distance and terrain already slow response times.
BIRRR Co-Founder Kristy Sparrow says confusion around communications can have serious consequences in isolated areas.
“We know confusion about mobile coverage, satellite capability and alternative numbers can delay critical responses, particularly in isolated areas,” she said.
She says knowing how to contact emergency services should be a core part of farm safety planning.
“Families must understand their devices, check connectivity settings and ensure all household members know how to call for help,” she said.
CWA of New South Wales Chief Executive Danica Leys says preparation is especially important for rural communities, where distance and terrain can delay assistance.
The groups are urging households to discuss emergency procedures, confirm property details and ensure everyone can clearly communicate their location when every minute counts.
