NFF urges farmers to strengthen biosecurity as bird flu spreads

The National Farmers’ Federation is urging farmers to review their biosecurity plans as the H5N1 strain of avian influenza continues to spread among wild birds across Australia.

The warning comes after testing confirmed the virus has spread between wild birds on Australian soil for the first time since it was detected last month.

The H5 strain has now been confirmed in 27 cases across four Australian states, with the NFF warning farmers across all livestock industries to remain vigilant.

NFF Chief Executive Officer Mike Guerin says it is an important reminder for farmers to ensure their biosecurity measures are up to date.

“Bird flu poses a serious threat to poultry, as well as a much smaller cross-species risk across livestock industries,” Mr Guerin said.

The NFF says producers should review their biosecurity plans, maintain accurate records of people and animal movements, and identify ways to reduce potential risks on-farm.
