A regional mayor in one of Flow FM's listener areas has floated the rapid uptake of motorists in his jurisdiction who are wanting to replace their cars with electric vehicles.
Speaking about newly-installed charging stations across his LGA, Lockhart Shire Council Mayor, Greg Verdon, appeared on the Country Viewpoint discussing the rise in popularity of electric vehicles, despite short battery durations and a general lack of charging stations in country areas.
"We're gearing up for the onslaught, I guess, of electric vehicles", Verdon said.
We've had two chargers installed at the Rock Recreation Ground. We have also had chargers installed in Lockhart, one at the Caravan Park and one near the Greens Gunyah Museum.
"The beauty of these is that, whilst they're not super quick chargers, it does give the people the opportunity to park their car, charge it up and go for a walk around the towns."
When questioned on whether he believes there will be a sustained appetite for electric vehicles in his jurisdiction, Verdon said the outlook is currently very positive for electric vehicle enthusiasts.
"Just in general conversations, the amount of people who have purchased or [are] looking to purchase either the hybrids or the full of hybrids or the full electric vehicles, is growing", Verdon said.
On Wednesday, NSW Premier Chris Minns indicated that New South Wales may axe its electric vehicle (EV) rebates.
“We’ve got a subsidy in place that we think is pushing up the costs of EVs and we’re seeing EVs take up from about two per cent to eight per cent in the marketplace,” said Mr Minns.
“Given all of those moving policy changes, we’re going to have to say something about it in the… budget, which is due in a month’s time, but any government faced with that set of policy circumstances would have to take it into consideration.”
