US launches investigation into lamb imports

The United States has launched a safeguard investigation into lamb imports following a petition from the American Sheep Industry Association, with Australia's red meat sector preparing to defend its position in the key export market.

The investigation, to be conducted by the US International Trade Commission, will examine whether rising imports have caused serious injury to the domestic sheep industry and whether additional trade measures, including tariffs, should be recommended.

Meat & Livestock Australia says there has been no change to Australia's market access or existing trading arrangements, with no decisions yet made on the outcome of the investigation.

MLA is working alongside Sheep Producers Australia, the Australian Meat Industry Council and the Federal Government on a coordinated response, with the commission expected to gather industry evidence, hold public hearings and deliver its findings within around 120 days.
