The National Farmers’ Federation has welcomed a Federal Government proposal to expand Australia’s Right to Repair laws to agricultural machinery.
The reforms would allow farmers greater freedom to choose who repairs and services farm equipment, reducing delays during critical planting and harvest periods.
NFF President Hamish McIntyre says the proposal follows years of advocacy from farmers frustrated by limited access to parts, software and authorised repair services.
He says greater competition in the repair sector could lower costs for producers and reduce machinery downtime, while Productivity Commission modelling suggests the reforms could deliver a broader boost to national economic output.
The consultation process is being led by Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh alongside Agriculture Minister Julie Collins and Small Business Minister Anne Aly.
The federation says it will continue working with government and industry groups to ensure the legislation delivers practical benefits for Australian farmers and regional businesses.
