Agriculture Victoria is expanding support for the state’s beekeepers, appointing two new bee biosecurity officers in Bendigo and Attwood.
The appointments form part of the Victorian Varroa Transition program, a two-year initiative helping beekeepers adapt to living with Varroa mite while safeguarding pollination services.
Victoria already employs four apiary inspectors, and the new officers will provide practical advice through workshops, field days, and one-on-one visits for commercial and recreational beekeepers.
Executive Director Biosecurity Charlotte Austin says the new roles reinforce the state’s commitment to hive health and industry resilience.
The officers will also support Victoria’s preparedness for exotic bee pests, strengthening emergency response planning and early detection systems.
Recent detections of pyrethroid-resistant Varroa mites in northern New South Wales underline the importance of careful monitoring, chemical rotation, and following all permit and label directions.
Ms Austin says the program is essential for protecting both individual beekeeping businesses and the broader agricultural system.
