Food Security Push Tops NSW Farmers Conference

Food security has dominated the opening of the 2026 NSW Farmers Conference, with delegates calling for stronger government support to boost Australia's domestic fuel and fertiliser production.

The push follows major supply disruptions this year, which saw urea prices rise by more than 90 per cent after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, forcing some grain and vegetable growers to scale back winter plantings.

NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin says the disruption has highlighted Australia's heavy reliance on imported fuel and fertiliser, leaving agriculture exposed to global price shocks and supply shortages.

He says greater investment in local manufacturing would improve supply security, reduce production costs and help strengthen Australia's long-term food security.

Delegates also heard calls for increased investment in storage infrastructure, along with expanded tax incentives and a longer instant asset write-off to encourage on-farm storage and more efficient fuel and fertiliser use.
