NHVR Warns Over Illegal Heavy Vehicle Speed Tampering

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has issued a strong warning following a nationwide enforcement operation targeting speeding and illegally modified heavy vehicle speed limiters.

Operation Quicksilver involved more than two thousand vehicle intercepts across five states, with almost one in ten vehicles found to be either speeding or fitted with tampered speed limiters.

In one of the most serious cases, officers detected a heavy vehicle modified to reach speeds of up to 250 kilometres an hour.

NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati says tampering with speed limiters is illegal and places both drivers and other road users at serious risk.

The regulator says operators can face prosecution or have vehicles grounded under Heavy Vehicle National Law, while reminding drivers facing workplace pressure to speed that confidential reporting options are available.
