FUEL SECURITY A FOOD SECURITY ISSUE

GrainGrowers is calling for stronger fuel security measures ahead of a near-record harvest, warning disruptions could affect food production and freight across regional Australia.

Chief Executive Shona Gawel says the Federal Government’s plans for a strategic fuel reserve and increased stockholdings are a positive step, but fuel must be able to reach the communities that need it.

“Fuel security is fundamentally about economic resilience and keeping essential industries operating when supply chains come under pressure,” Ms Gawel said.

“Grain growers are key contributors to Australia’s food security and reliable access to fuel is critical from planting, right through to harvest and transportation beyond the farm gate.”

GrainGrowers is calling for diesel to be prioritised in the strategic reserve, alongside emergency release mechanisms for regional shortages.

Ms Gawel says better monitoring of fuel availability through distributors would also help identify shortages before they affect food production and freight movements.
