SafeWork SA has announced a 12-month farm safety campaign aimed at reducing workplace deaths and serious injuries in South Australia’s agricultural sector. The initiative follows a concerning year, with six farm-related fatalities and at least 13 serious injuries reported in 2024–25, including incidents involving quadbikes, machinery, and grain silos.
Commencing on October 1, the campaign will see SafeWork SA inspectors visit farms across the state, particularly those with high injury claim rates, to assess compliance with Work Health and Safety laws. Areas of focus include machinery maintenance, chemical handling, working at heights, and safety in confined spaces.
Executive Director Glenn Farrell said workplace fatalities have a “painful impact on families, workmates and regional communities" - urging farmers to engage with the agency’s free Advisory Service.
“We want to work with farmers to make safety a part of agricultural culture,” Mr Farrell said.
The Advisory Service provides no-cost safety advice, with experienced advisors offering tailored on-farm support. The campaign will also include advertising across regional and digital platforms to raise awareness.
Agriculture remains a critical industry for South Australia, employing over 30,000 people and contributing more than $7.8 billion to the state economy. It is also considered a national safety priority due to the high rate of serious incidents.
Farmers can access support or book a visit by calling 1300 365 255 or visiting safework.sa.gov.au.
