Western Australian sheep producers and processors are set to receive $20 million in the first round of the Supply Chain Capacity Program grants.

The funding is part of the Australian Government’s $139.8 million Sheep Industry Transition Assistance Package.

Forty producers and five processors will benefit from this round, with projects ranging from on-farm finishing systems to lairage upgrades, cold storage improvements and abattoir expansions across the Wheatbelt, South West, Great Southern and Esperance Goldfields regions.

Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said the grants will help producers diversify, improve efficiency and strengthen supply chains as the sector transitions away from live sheep exports by sea.

“This funding will make businesses more flexible, efficient and resilient,” she said.

WA Agriculture Minister Jackie Jarvis added that the grants will enhance business confidence and readiness while maintaining market access and productivity.

Projects aim to improve supply chain reliability, provide flexibility for producers and support a more consistent livestock supply to processors.

A second round of grants opens on February 27, with further details available through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

Minister Jarvis noted that international demand, particularly in the Gulf region, remains strong for WA sheep meat, reflecting long-standing trading relationships and a reputation for quality.
