REPORT SHOWS HALF OF VICTORIA'S ROADS ARE WRECKED
The Victorian Farmers Federation says almost half of Victoria’s roads are now in poor or very poor condition, following a damning report from the state’s Auditor-General.
The report found a third of the state’s roads have just five years of usable life remaining, while the Department of Transport says it needs at least $3 billion a year to maintain the network.
VFF President Ryan Milgate says the findings confirm what farmers and regional communities have been experiencing for years, with potholes, crumbling road edges and temporary repairs becoming increasingly common.
He says the road network is deteriorating faster than the government can repair it, and the current level of investment is not sustainable.
The VFF is calling for roads to be rebuilt to a standard that lasts, saying better investment would benefit farmers, regional communities and Victorian taxpayers.
Mr Milgate says the upcoming 2026 State Election provides an opportunity for all sides of politics to put forward a plan to fix the state’s roads, with the VFF also urging regional road users to sign its roads pledge.
