PRODUCERS URGED TO WATCH FOR BLOAT AS SPRING PASTURES TAKE OFF

Livestock producers are being urged to watch for bloat in cattle as spring pasture growth accelerates across southern Australia.

Agriculture Victoria Senior Veterinary Officer Dr Jeff Cave says the condition can prove fatal within as little as 30 minutes, particularly when hungry stock are given sudden access to rapidly growing feed.

He says the risk is highest in lush, immature, legume-dominant pastures, particularly those containing clover and lucerne.

To reduce that risk, producers are being advised to provide hay before moving cattle onto high-risk paddocks, helping to reduce the amount of fresh pasture they consume.

A range of preventative products is also available, with producers encouraged to speak with their veterinarian or local Agriculture Victoria animal health staff about the most suitable option for their circumstances.
