The New South Wales Government has announced a $4.2 million expansion of shark safety measures, aimed at improving protection for swimmers and surfers this summer, following a spate of recent shark incidents off the state’s coast.

The funding comes amid heightened community concern following these recent incidents, and a renewed focus on public safety during the peak summer swimming season.

Authorities say the expanded measures are designed to improve awareness and early warnings, including during periods of elevated risk such as after storms and heavy rainfall.

A major focus of the package is expanded drone surveillance, with Surf Life Saving NSW adding patrols at an additional 30 beaches from 24 January.

The drones will operate seven days a week through to the end of the April school holidays, providing real-time monitoring and alerts for beach users.

The investment also includes targeted research into bull shark movements in Sydney Harbour and surrounding estuaries, helping identify when and where risks are higher.

The measures build on existing shark management programs already operating across New South Wales, with authorities emphasising that clear information and timely warnings remain central to keeping people safe.
