Local councils welcome funding boost under national agreement

Local government representatives have welcomed a new funding agreement between the Federal Government and councils, aimed at strengthening financial support for communities across Australia.

The Local Government Federation Compact includes a commitment to increase Financial Assistance Grants annually, providing councils with greater certainty to deliver local services and infrastructure.

Local Government NSW President Darcy Byrne says the announcement is an important step forward, particularly for rural, regional and remote councils facing significant financial pressure.

He says secure funding will help councils invest in essential services, roads and infrastructure needed by communities.

The five-year agreement will also allow Roads to Recovery funding to be used for council plant and equipment, support local government apprenticeships, and improve capabilities in areas including housing, emergency management and aged care.

Mayor Byrne says councils are ready to work with governments and local government unions to ensure the agreement delivers long-term benefits.

He says the commitment will help secure the future of local services across the country.
