The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has launched a multi-state compliance operation targeting heavy vehicles transporting grapes, after nearly 40 per cent of intercepted vehicles were found to be non-compliant last season.
Operation Fortified will run across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales during the peak harvest period.
NHVR Director of Operations Southern Region, Paul Simionato, says overfilled or poorly secured grape trailers pose serious safety risks, particularly when spillages create slippery road conditions.
Almost 1.6 million tonnes of grapes were crushed in Australia last year, highlighting the scale of the transport task during vintage.
Officers will focus on mass, load restraint, permit and fatigue offences, with work diaries and vehicle permits subject to inspection.
Director of Operations Central Region, Brett Patterson, says non-compliance rates have risen from 31 per cent in 2024 to almost 40 per cent in 2025, with fatigue offences a particular concern.
Drivers experiencing pressure to operate while fatigued are urged to contact the regulator’s confidential reporting line.
The NHVR says the operation aims to protect all road users during one of the busiest periods for the wine industry.
