Aboriginal communities in northern New South Wales are strengthening preparedness for the potential arrival of H5 avian influenza through a mob-led gathering in Armidale.
The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has partnered with the Armidale Local Aboriginal Land Council and Wildlife Health Australia to deliver the Message Stick meeting.
The session focused on building knowledge around identifying, reporting and responding to bird flu risks, while sharing information across communities caring for Country.
Armidale LALC CEO Lyndon Strong says cultural practices and close connections to wildlife may place Aboriginal communities at higher risk if the virus reaches Australia.
Australia remains the only continent free of H5 bird flu, which has caused severe disease and high mortality rates in poultry, wildlife and some mammals overseas.
Authorities say Aboriginal Ranger teams, Elders and community members play a critical role in surveillance, preparedness and protecting both people and biodiversity.
