Australia’s emerging coffee industry is positioning itself to capitalise on growing global supply shortages and rising demand for premium, traceable beans.
The opportunity was highlighted at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo, where industry leaders explored Australia’s potential to become a serious contributor to global coffee markets.
While still small by international standards, Australian-grown coffee is gaining recognition for its high quality, strong biosecurity and clean production environment.
New research led by Southern Cross University has identified promising international coffee varieties suited to Australian conditions, with potential to improve yields, reduce labour costs and strengthen disease resistance.
Industry representatives say innovation, combined with Australia’s strong provenance and short supply chains, could provide a competitive edge in specialty markets.
The sector’s future growth is expected to rely on continued research, collaboration and the ability of growers to translate new knowledge into on-farm outcomes.
