Industry Calls for Strong Action on Cattle Tick Protection in NSW

Agricultural groups and animal welfare organisations are jointly calling on the NSW Government to maintain the state’s cattle tick eradication program, warning that any weakening of the system could jeopardise the state’s tick-free status.

NSW Farmers, Norco, the Australian Veterinary Association and RSPCA NSW have all urged the government to reaffirm long-term funding as an independent review of the program continues. Cattle ticks remain Australia’s most serious external parasite of cattle, costing the industry around $160 million each year.

NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin says strong surveillance, treatment and compliance programs are essential to protect livestock health, production and farm livelihoods. RSPCA NSW and the AVA have echoed these concerns, emphasising the animal welfare risks and warning there is “no halfway solution” when responding to tick incursions.

Dairy cooperative Norco also warns that reduced protections could impact milk supply and drive up consumer prices if cattle ticks gain a foothold in the state. The organisations are calling for full commitment to the eradication program to safeguard both industry productivity and animal welfare.
