How young is too young for kids to start competitive sport?

Flow FM announcers, Rikki Lambert and Ellis Gelios, digested the latest Flinders Uni research on negative effects of 3-5 year old kids starting sport too early on the Flow Friday Sports Show.

Lambert, who hosts the Breaky Flow from 6am on weekdays on Flow FM, is also a grassroots football coach in his spare time and was at odds with some of the points raised in the recent report.

Lambert reinforced on a number of occasions that whether parents wanted to facilitate a competitive nature for their young children or not, the most fundamental objective for all parents should be to afford their children to have fun playing the game and develop 'core skills'.

He argued that across some metro and most regional areas organised sport is positive for youth development.
