Former Wallabies fly half Carter Gordon has made a surprise return to rugby union, signing a three-year deal with Rugby Australia and the Queensland Reds.
The 24-year-old had spent the past year with the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL but has opted to return to the code where he first made his mark.
Gordon made eight Test appearances for the Wallabies in 2023 before switching codes. However, his stint in rugby league was hampered by a spinal injury, and he played just one NRL match — in Round 27 — before requesting a release from the Titans, which was granted this week.
In a statement, Gordon expressed his excitement to rejoin the sport he “grew up playing and loving,” and said he was motivated to contribute to both Queensland and the Wallabies. Reds coach Les Kiss welcomed the signing, describing Gordon as a versatile and high-quality addition to the squad.
Gordon previously played for the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby Pacific, where he accumulated 46 appearances. With the Rebels no longer in the competition, his move to the Reds marks a return home to Queensland, where he grew up and completed his schooling.
His return adds much-needed depth to Australia’s fly half stocks as the Wallabies prepare for the 2027 World Cup on home soil. With Tom Lynagh and Harry McLaughlin-Phillips already in the Reds setup, Gordon may also be deployed at inside centre or fullback depending on team selection.
