A major new initiative will launch next year to help Australia’s sheep industry adapt to climate change and meet global sustainability standards.

The Green Sheep Project, led by Sheep Producers Australia, will provide producers with practical tools to improve environmental outcomes and demonstrate their sustainability credentials.

The three-year project will partner with regional Natural Resource Management organisations and supply chain stakeholders to deliver on-farm trials and training in Victoria, Western Australia, NSW, and Tasmania.

Sheep Producers Australia CEO Bonnie Skinner said the initiative is critical for the industry's future.

“This project is an investment in our world-leading industry,” she said. “It equips sheep producers with the skills and knowledge to support climate-smart practices.”

The program will help producers manage pastures more effectively, document natural capital, and make informed decisions using data-driven tools. It's supported by a wide range of industry bodies including Meat & Livestock Australia, Australian Wool Innovation, and AUS-MEAT.

Sustainability Policy Advisor Carolyn Cameron emphasised the project’s collaborative approach.

“What makes the Green Sheep Project unique is the whole-of-sector approach – from producers to processors and industry bodies all at the same table,” she said.

The project reflects growing demand for traceable and verifiable sustainability efforts and aims to ensure Australia remains a global leader in ethical and sustainable sheep production.
