Australia’s grainfed beef industry has recorded its fifth consecutive quarter of growth, with new data showing record cattle numbers on feed and expanded feedlot capacity.
The June 2025 feedlot survey from the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) reports 1.58 million head on feed, with national feedlot capacity reaching a new high of 1.7 million head.
ALFA President Grant Garey said the results reflect strong confidence in the industry’s long-term growth.“Australian feedlots continue to play a key role in delivering consistent, high-quality beef to a growing range of domestic and global markets,” he said.
The sector also hit a new record for grainfed cattle turnoff, with almost 900,000 head processed during the quarter - driving production and export volumes to all-time highs. Exports rose 25% year-on-year, with grainfed beef now making up 29% of all beef exports.
MLA’s Erin Lukey said strong international demand, especially from China, Japan and South Korea, is supporting the sector despite rising input costs.
“Australia exported grainfed beef to 51 countries - the most diverse market mix since 2017,” she said.
A new National Feeder Heifer Indicator has also been launched to support market transparency, tracking saleyard throughput of key feeder stock across the country.
