Grain producers warned to prepare as mouse activity rises

South Australian grain growers are being urged to stay alert for increasing mouse activity as numbers continue to rise across key farming regions.

The latest CSIRO Mouse Monitoring Report has found moderate to high numbers in parts of the Adelaide Plains and Yorke Peninsula, with scientists warning that populations could build rapidly over summer if conditions remain favourable.

Grain Producers SA Chief Executive Brad Perry said the findings were a reminder for growers to stay proactive and report local activity to help track emerging problem areas.

“We’ve seen what happens when mouse numbers get away from us — the impacts can be devastating, not just to crops but to stored grain, machinery and infrastructure,” Mr Perry said.

He encouraged growers to monitor their paddocks, clean up grain spillages and use chew cards to gauge activity levels, noting that high-quality food sources can fuel breeding through the warmer months.

Mr Perry also called on decision-makers to consider reintroducing access to double-strength mouse bait, saying early action is critical.

“If mouse numbers continue to climb, South Australian grain producers need every tool they can to control these pests,” he said.

“Preparedness now, both on-farm and at a national policy level, is the best insurance against a repeat of previous outbreaks.”

The CSIRO will release its next national monitoring report in March or April next year.
