The Federal Government has secured around 90-thousand tonnes of additional agricultural fertiliser for Australian farmers under new Strategic Reserve powers, aimed at protecting supply chains affected by conflict in the Middle East.
The shipments have been backed through Export Finance Australia in partnership with CSBP and Incitec Pivot, with the Government saying the additional urea will provide greater certainty for growers making planting and production decisions this season.
More shipments are expected in coming weeks, with the latest announcement building on an earlier agreement securing 250-thousand tonnes of fertiliser supply from Indonesia through PT Pupuk.
Canberra has also announced a seven-and-a-half billion dollar Fuel and Fertiliser Security Facility to strengthen long-term supply and storage capacity, alongside work to streamline fertiliser imports and improve domestic resilience.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says reliable access to fertiliser is critical to Australia’s food security, export markets and the confidence of farming communities during a period of global uncertainty.
