PRODUCERS URGED TO WATCH FOR SIGNS OF BIRD FLU

Australia’s red meat industry is being urged to monitor and report signs of bird flu as the H5N1 strain of avian influenza continues to spread across the country.

Animal Health Australia says while the industry is unlikely to be significantly affected by the spread of the virus among bird populations, strong on-farm biosecurity remains important.

Landholders and red meat producers are being encouraged to watch for sick or dead birds, native wildlife or animals, while keeping working dogs and pets away from wild birds and wildlife.

Animal Health Australia says bird flu can be difficult to identify, with some infected animals showing few or no signs of disease.

It says producers should not approach or touch sick or dead animals, but can take photos or video from a safe distance before reporting them to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
