Australia’s goat industry is developing its first national sustainability framework, aimed at measuring the sector’s performance and strengthening the reputation of Australian goat products in domestic and international markets.

The development of the framework is being lead by the Goat Industry Council of Australia, with support from Meat and Livestock Australia and other project partners, is leading development of the framework, which will establish sustainability priorities, indicators and measures for the industry.

The council says the framework is being developed in response to growing expectations from customers, governments, regulators and investors for industries to demonstrate their sustainability credentials.

It will not be an accreditation scheme, but instead act as an industry-wide report card, helping identify priorities, measure progress, address data gaps and guide future research and investment.

The framework is being overseen by a steering group of producers from the meat, fibre, dairy and live export sectors. The Goat Industry Council says the initiative will help keep the industry competitive, resilient and well positioned to meet the expectations of future markets.
