PICASSO COWS HIGHLIGHT STUDENT INTEREST IN DAIRY FARMING
Students across three states have taken part in this year’s Picasso Cows competition, learning more about dairy farming while putting their own creative spin on the industry.
The Dairy Australia program has been running for more than 10 years, combining lessons about dairy farming, animal care and sustainability with the chance for students to transform life-size fibreglass cows into their own artworks.
This year, students from Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia took part, with dairy farmer ambassadors Rachel Nicholson and Narelle Zanker helping to judge the entries.
Rachel says students asked detailed questions about cow care, nutrition, milk production and sustainability, while Narelle says farm visits and virtual sessions helped build their understanding of what happens on a dairy farm.
The pair say students were particularly interested in where their food comes from and how milk gets from the farm to the consumer.
They say the quality and creativity of this year’s entries reflected that enthusiasm and showed the value of giving young people a practical connection to dairy farming.
