Garage fires prompt winter safety warning

Victorian residents are being urged to check fire safety measures in their garages, after more than 120 fires have started in garages or vehicle storage areas since April.

Fire Rescue Victoria and the CFA say garages can contain lithium-ion batteries, gas cylinders, petrol and chemicals, allowing fires to take hold quickly and spread to adjoining homes.

The warning follows a garage fire at Mentone last month, which was caused by a battery being charged.

Residents with garages attached to their homes are being encouraged to install an interconnected smoke alarm or, where dust and exhaust fumes are an issue, a heat detector.

The CFA is also urging people to use only chargers supplied with devices, or compatible certified alternatives, and never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.

Fire authorities say garages should also be regularly cleared of rubbish and clutter, while damaged electrical equipment and cords should be taken out of use and repaired only by a qualified tradesperson.
