SA wine industry faces ongoing pressure

South Australia’s wine industry is being brought together with the State Government to address significant challenges facing growers and winemakers.

Premier Peter Malinauskas held a forum with industry representatives on Thursday, including the South Australian Wine Industry Association and Wine Grape Council of South Australia.

The sector is facing pressure from global oversupply, falling grape prices, changing consumer demand and the ongoing impacts of previous international trade disruptions.

Wine was South Australia’s third-largest export commodity by value in the year to March, with the state exporting 317.5 million litres worth $1.62 billion.

The State Government has committed more than eight million dollars through programs targeting new export markets, re-engagement with China, domestic demand and industry development.

The Government has also announced a memorandum of understanding with major US retailer Total Wine and More, aimed at increasing the presence of premium South Australian wines across its national network.
