Victoria is boosting its defences against H5N1 bird flu with one point seven million dollars in new federal funding as part of a one hundred million dollar national biosecurity package. The funding will equip Victoria with rapid testing tools, decontamination trailers and field response equipment to strengthen emergency preparedness.
Australia remains free from the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, but outbreaks overseas and migratory bird movements have increased the risk of introduction. Authorities are working with the poultry industry, wildlife experts and land managers to prepare for a potential detection and protect high-risk species.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said maintaining Australia’s biosecurity status is a top priority.
“Australia is the only continent free of H5 bird flu, which is why we’ve invested record funding to maintain that status and prepare for this disease,” she said.
Victorian Agriculture Minister Ros Spence said the state is taking significant steps to strengthen its biosecurity system.
“We’re making sure we have the capability to respond if H5N1 reaches our shores,” she said, noting that the Victorian Government has also committed thirty-six point seven million dollars to biosecurity readiness in the 2025–26 Budget.
