CSIRO researchers are warning farmers across eastern Australia to stay alert, with signs pointing to an impending mouse population boom. Recent trapping has revealed high numbers of pregnant females in cropping regions of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.
CSIRO research officer Steve Henry told the ABC that he is concerned for next autumn’s planting season if favourable conditions persist. Farmers are being urged to maintain good harvest hygiene and to monitor for early signs of mouse activity.
In response, Grain Producers Australia (GPA) has applied for a permit to allow the use of ZP50 bait, which is twice the strength of the currently approved product. GPA R&D spokesperson and Wimmera grower Andrew Weidemann said the higher-strength bait was proving to be a crucial control tool.
“The ZP50 formulation is clearly more effective for growers and is a critical tool for managing outbreaks,” Mr Weidemann said.
He added that GPA had commissioned environmental risk specialist Chris Lee-Steere to ensure the bait can be used safely. “That’s the research we need to underpin the survival of the product — making sure we have the data to allow our regulator to give the green light,” Mr Weidemann said.
