FARMERS SEEK VOICE IN DATA CENTRE EXPANSION

Victoria's peak farming body is calling for greater scrutiny of the state's rapidly expanding data centre sector, warning agriculture must not be overlooked as development accelerates.

The Victorian Farmers Federation has released a new issues paper examining the potential impact of more than 30 proposed data centre projects across the state.

VFF President Ryan Milgate says while the industry may deliver economic benefits, policymakers need to better understand the consequences for farming communities before projects proceed.

The federation says proposed developments could collectively require around nine gigawatts of electricity — equivalent to four Loy Yang A power stations — while water demand could increase by the equivalent annual usage of an additional 330,000 people.

Concerns have also been raised about competition for land, water and renewable energy infrastructure, particularly during drought periods.

Mr Milgate says farmers need a genuine seat at the table as governments consider how to balance future technology investment with the long-term needs of agriculture and regional communities.
