GRAIN INDUSTRY RECORDS STRONG GROWTH BUT RISKS REMAIN

GrainGrowers’ 2026 State of the Australian Grain Industry Report has revealed that average Australian grain production has increased by 45% over the past five years, reaching 64 million tonnes in 2025-26.

The report shows that five of the past six years have been the biggest grain production seasons on record, with growers increasing production while only modestly expanding the area planted.

GrainGrowers Chair Rhys Turton says the gains reflect growers’ adoption of new technology, sustainable farming practices and improved management of climate volatility.

The report estimates that the grain sector has contributed an average $27 billion to the Australian economy each year over the past five years, while Australia exported 39.6 million tonnes of grain in 2024-25.

However, despite the postivies, Mr Turton says geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and protectionist trade policies are creating greater risks for the industry.

He says commitments to increase domestic fuel storage and fertiliser production, along with support for low-carbon liquid fuels, will be critical to protecting Australia’s food security and maintaining its position as a major supplier to global grain markets.
