Residents in Central Darling Shire have elected councillors for the first time in 12 years, marking a historic return to local democracy under a new rural council model.

The Shire, located in far west NSW, has been under administration since 2013 due to long-standing financial and governance issues.

The elections follow the introduction of the Rural and Remote Council model, developed by the Minns Labor Government in consultation with the community and stakeholders.

Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig said it was an important milestone for the region.

“Democracy is restored for Central Darling Shire,” he said.

“We’re ensuring these communities have a local, democratic voice once again.”

One councillor has already been elected uncontested in Menindee, while additional appointments and elections will fill remaining seats ahead of the first Council meeting in October.

The NSW Government has also committed $6 million to support the new Council, with funding to address infrastructure priorities and build local capacity.
