Australian Dairy Farmers says recent action by the consumer watchdog against Lactalis Australia highlights the importance of maintaining trust in the nation’s dairy industry.
Lactalis has paid almost 60 thousand dollars in penalties after the ACCC issued infringement notices over claims two milk products marketed as “fresh” contained significant amounts of powdered, reconstituted ingredients.
ADF President Ben Bennett says consumers have a right to know what they are buying, while farmers need a marketplace built on honesty and transparency.
He says the issue also reflects broader pressures facing the dairy sector, including declining farmer numbers and falling local milk production.
Mr Bennett says reduced domestic production could increase reliance on imported dairy products and substitute ingredients, which he says risks damaging consumer confidence.
He says protecting the reputation of Australian dairy requires action across the entire supply chain, including processors, retailers and regulators.
