Vegetable Industry calls for Urgent Action on Input Costs

Australia’s vegetable industry is calling for greater urgency and clarity on plans to relieve surging input costs and supply shortages, as uncertainty continues to weigh heavily on growers.

Industry body AUSVEG says the lack of clear direction is making it increasingly difficult for producers to plan, placing pressure on the supply of fresh Australian-grown vegetables.

The call follows Monday’s National Cabinet meeting, where leaders outlined a National Fuel Security Plan, including a temporary cut to fuel excise and a pause to heavy vehicle road user charges.

AUSVEG says while those measures may provide some short-term relief, more targeted action is needed to address the compounding pressures facing vegetable producers.

The organisation is also seeking detail on how growers will be prioritised for access to critical inputs such as fuel, fertiliser and freight under any future constraints.

A recent survey of more than 200 growers found 28 percent have already reduced or stopped planting, with others reconsidering production due to ongoing uncertainty.

Those who have scaled back report cutting planting by an average of 35 percent.

Growers say costs for diesel, fertiliser and freight have risen sharply, while only a fraction of those increases are being passed on through the supply chain.

AUSVEG says clearer and more immediate action will be key to maintaining production and ensuring consistent supply in the months ahead.
