The South Australian State Emergency Service is holding multiple information sessions this week across the Eyre Peninsula - with more to come across the state at later dates - aimed at attracting new volunteers to join their ranks.
SES Volunteer Recruitment Officer Dan Carter said the sessions will offer locals a chance to learn more about the vital work the SES does and how they can get involved.
“We’re running three sessions—Port Lincoln on Tuesday, July 15 at 7pm, Tumby Bay on Wednesday, July 16 at 7pm, and a pop-up at Cummins IGA on Thursday from 11am to 3pm,” Mr Carter said.
“They’re open to anyone over 18 who wants to help their community."
Mr Carter said the SES was a "diverse agency" who is always looking to attract a range of different people.
"We often find that if you don't believe you'll fit into the SES, there is a role out there for you."
"We have a variety of courses and roles - both operational and non-operational - that people can do, not just the ones you see in the media all the time - it's a bit like a choose your own adventure."
Attendees will be given an overview of SES capabilities in their region, such as marine rescue and road crash response in Port Lincoln, and non-operational roles like radio communications and drone operation through the West Operations Support Unit.
Anyone who chooses to sign will then be booked in for an onboarding day where they will go over essential skills including knot tying, ladder climbing, small engines knowledge and vehicle familiarisation.
"From there on they can really set their own sort of journey," Mr Carter said.
