SA grain yield estimates rise on strong seasonal start

South Australia’s grain production estimate has risen to 9.8 million tonnes following above-average autumn and early winter rainfall.

The latest PIRSA Crop and Pasture Report puts the estimate nearly nine per cent above the first forecast for the season and 11% above the five-year average.

Strong growing conditions have also delivered abundant pasture and feed, supporting livestock condition and reducing the need for supplementary feeding. Producers are reporting strong lambing and calving results and confidence remains high on the back of favourable livestock prices.

Pest and disease pressure has increased with the good seasonal conditions, although most issues have been managed through monitoring and control. Earlier concerns about mice have also eased following baiting programs.

PIRSA says the grain estimate could rise further if late winter and spring rainfall remains favourable and crops avoid significant weather damage during flowering and grain fill.
