The Federal Government has announced an independent review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct, as Australia’s horticulture industry continues to grow in value and complexity.
The review will be led by Mr Chris Leptos AO and will examine whether the Code remains fit-for-purpose nearly a decade after its last review.
Horticulture is now Australia’s third-largest agricultural sector, with production forecast to reach nearly nineteen billion dollars this financial year and exports expected to hit a record four-point-four billion.
The Code governs trade between growers and wholesalers of unprocessed fruit, vegetables, nuts and herbs, with the aim of ensuring transparency and fair dealing.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says the sector has changed significantly since 2015 and that updated regulatory settings are needed to reflect modern market realities.
Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh says fair competition underpins a strong horticulture industry, from the first handshake through to final payment.
The National Farmers’ Federation has welcomed the review, saying it comes at a critical time for growers facing rising costs, tight margins and increased market concentration.
NFF Horticulture Council Chair Jolyon Burnett is encouraging growers and wholesalers to participate, saying the outcomes will shape wholesale market behaviour for years to come.
A final report is expected by the end of April, with consultation papers now open for industry feedback.
