South Australians are being urged to take extra care on the roads, as a high-risk travel period begins with major events and school holidays driving increased traffic.
Fifteen lives were lost on state roads in March, marking one of the deadliest months in recent years and prompting renewed warnings from the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia.
RAA Senior Manager of Road Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain says increased traffic and longer journeys can heighten the risk of serious crashes.
He says when traffic volumes rise, so too does the likelihood of mistakes and dangerous driving behaviour, particularly during busy periods on the roads.
Mr Mountain says speed, distraction, fatigue and impairment remain leading contributors to road trauma, warning that even familiar trips can present changing conditions.
He is also encouraging drivers to prepare their vehicles before travelling, noting many regional breakdowns could be avoided through simple checks, helping reduce risks for all road users during this busy period.
