RAA Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain issues road safety warning ahead of Christmas

The RAA's Charles Mountain joined Flow FM to emphasise the importance of road safety going into the holiday period, which will see increased traffic on city and regional roads.

"(Christmas) is a busy time of year both as people do their last-minute shopping and try to cram in all those social functions and see family and friends. And obviously once Christmas has passed people often head to a destination whether it be in the regional parts of South Australia or traveling interstate."

Mr Mountain shared a key message for motorists ahead of the holiday period.

"Ensure that you are patient with everybody else because particularly around our busy shopping precincts you will find they are busier and that can be a little bit challenging sometimes to find a park and then perhaps get in and out of the car park once you've completed your shopping."

"But again, you just understand everyone's in the same situation, and you will get to where you need to, but it just might take a little bit longer than is desirable."

He went on to specify his message for those who will be driving on country roads during the holidays.

"Ensure that we're well rested when we're heading on longer journeys and that we've got some regular rest breaks planned if we're traveling longer than a couple of hours, because it's very important to ensure that you stop, stretch your legs, get out."

"If you're lucky enough, change drivers as well so you can have a bit of a break on the longer journeys too. And dare I say enjoy a cup of coffee and take in the time to enjoy the trip traveling interstate."

Mr Mountain also emphasised the importance of overtaking on regional roads only when it is safe to do so.

"When you're traveling in the regional roads, be mindful of the fact you're typically traveling at higher speeds and be mindful of the fact that it's important to keep good distance between yourself and other vehicles ahead of you."

"If you do have to overtake a slower vehicle, then please plan this manoeuvre very carefully, look for a good clear straight stretch of road and ensure that you lay yourself plenty of time to safely get past... bearing in mind that legally, you're not allowed to exceed the posted speed limit while overtaking."
