Producers to Decide Future of Livestock Industry Funds

South Australian livestock producers are being called on to vote on proposed changes to the state’s Sheep and Cattle Industry Funds.

Livestock SA has opened voting as part of a required review under legislation, with new regulations due by September 2026.

Chair Gillian Fennell says the outcome will ultimately be determined by producer participation.

She says the vote represents a key opportunity for industry to directly shape recommendations that will be put to government.

The proposed changes follow extensive consultation, including regional meetings, webinars and written submissions from producers.

They include a staged increase to Sheep Industry Fund contributions and a shift to per-transaction collection for the Cattle Industry Fund.

Livestock SA says the funds are critical for biosecurity, traceability, predator control and market access, but warns rising costs are placing pressure on existing arrangements.

Voting is open throughout April, with all South Australian sheep and cattle producers eligible to take part online.

The voting process initiated by Livestock SA presents both an opportunity and a challenge for producers. With the proposed changes focusing on funding mechanisms, it's crucial to analyze the financial implications of the staged increase in contributions and the shift to per-transaction collection.
