The NSW Government is working with agricultural show societies and the Country Women’s Association to strengthen preparations for H5 avian influenza as the state’s show season continues.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is providing biosecurity advice, training and resources to help organisers manage risks around poultry exhibits and wildlife deaths.

NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Jo Coombe says the support will help show committees make informed decisions to protect poultry producers and communities.

AgShows NSW president Jody Nelson-Gleeson says the department’s guidance has helped show societies prepare to manage poultry exhibits safely and respond to potential disease concerns.

More than 180 agricultural shows are held across NSW each year, attracting more than one million people, with poultry exhibits a major drawcard for many events.

H5 avian influenza has still not been detected in commercial poultry flocks or captive birds. The department says enhanced surveillance, rapid laboratory testing and dedicated response teams are supporting efforts to detect and respond to potential cases. People who find sick or dead wildlife should avoid contact and report it through the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
