New South Wales’ peak farming body is calling on the state government to clarify how it will protect landholders as it pushes ahead with new gas exploration.
NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin says while producers recognise the need for reliable energy, development must not come at the expense of water security or biosecurity.
He warned poorly regulated exploration could expose rural communities to significant risks, including the spread of weeds, pests and disease.
Concerns have also been raised about groundwater impacts, particularly in already water-stressed regions where supply is under pressure.
Mr Martin says stronger safeguards are needed, including enforceable biosecurity protocols, better landholder engagement and tougher compliance measures.
He says until clear protections and accountability are demonstrated, farmers will remain wary of expansion in the sector.
