The NSW Coalition is calling for state and federal support to bring the highly anticipated 2027 Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup to the regions.
The tournament would draw thousands of international players, officials and visitors to Canberra, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Queanbeyan and Goulburn, providing a massive boost to local sporting groups while bringing more than $26m worth of investment.
NSW Nationals Leader Dugald Saunders said it is the perfect opportunity to let our country communities shine on the global stage.
“This tournament will attract crowds from right across the world, allowing us to not only showcase our talented young athletes, but also all regional NSW has to offer”.
On top of State Government funding, local hockey associations are seeking $14.5m from the Commonwealth to upgrade playing fields, develop elite regional centres and enhance sustainability.
Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack said a modest investment from the Federal Government would reap returns for generations to come.
The event, which is held every two years, consists of 24 teams competing for the title and has previously been held in Chile, Germany, America, Argentina, Canada and Spain.
