Consumers can continue to enjoy NSW-grown berries with confidence following recent testing by the NSW Food Authority.

The testing was part of an ongoing program to monitor produce safety, alongside inspections by the NSW Environment Protection Authority, which found no evidence of off-label chemical use on berry farms.

Laboratory analysis of 100 samples of blueberries and raspberries purchased in Sydney found all pesticide residues well within legal limits. No prohibited chemicals, including thiometon, were detected.

NSW Food Authority Acting CEO Andrew Davies said the results confirm chemical use on northern NSW berry farms complies with regulations and is safe for consumers.

“The limits are set with large safety margins and take into account lifetime consumption,” he said. “All tested samples were compliant.”

Mr Davies advised washing fruit under cool running water before eating to remove surface residues and reduce bacterial risks.

“The public can be reassured that NSW berries meet food safety standards,” Mr Davies said.

“Our ongoing monitoring ensures consumers can trust the quality of locally grown produce.”
