The National Rural Health Alliance has joined the condemnation of the violent attack on independent federal MP Dr Helen Haines, as she remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

The Alliance has extended its support to Dr Haines’ family, staff and the Wangaratta community, highlighting her three decades of work in rural health before entering Parliament as a nurse, midwife, researcher and health leader.

NRHA chief executive Susi Tegen says the attack is a disturbing reminder of the impact of hatred and intimidation in public life, stressing violence has no place in Australian democracy.

Ms Tegen says people should not have to fear for their safety or that of their families because they have chosen to serve their communities.

She says Dr Haines has helped bring rural perspectives into national discussions, particularly on healthcare access and the funding gap between rural and urban Australians.

The Alliance is urging Australians to maintain respect and decency when engaging with public representatives, including when views differ, and has asked that Dr Haines and her family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.
