New research released by AgriFutures Australia has found poor and inconsistent internet and mobile coverage across farming regions is limiting productivity and increasing safety risks on Australian farms.
The report says reliable connectivity is now considered essential infrastructure for modern agriculture, with producers increasingly relying on digital technologies for livestock monitoring, precision agriculture and autonomous machinery.
AgriFutures Australia Managing Director Brianna Casey says blackspots and patchy coverage are continuing to frustrate producers and restrict the uptake of new technology.
The research examined emerging Low Earth Orbit satellite services and direct-to-handset technology, finding they can improve coverage in remote regions but are not a complete solution on their own.
Instead, the report recommends hybrid systems combining traditional mobile networks with satellite services to deliver more reliable whole-of-property coverage.
The findings also highlight concerns around digital capability, integration costs and limited access to independent advice, with AgriFutures calling for stronger policy support to ensure Australian agriculture remains productive, competitive and safe.
