Live Shark Sighting Data to Improve Water Safety

Water users are being encouraged to take advantage of a new real-time shark sighting system aimed at improving safety across South Australian coastal waters.

The upgraded reporting page, launched by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions, now publishes sightings live as they are submitted by the public.

Authorities say the change is designed to provide more timely and accessible information for beachgoers, recreational fishers and boaters.

All reports are made publicly available immediately in the interest of transparency, with entries later reviewed to remove duplicates or correct inaccuracies.

The department says the system relies on community participation, encouraging water users to report sightings promptly to help build an accurate and up-to-date picture of shark activity.

To support the rollout, new QR-coded reporting stickers are being distributed through Fishcare volunteers and selected tackle outlets.

Officials say the stickers are designed for use on boats and tackle boxes, allowing users to quickly access the reporting page or log a sighting while on the water.

The initiative is expected to strengthen public awareness and support safer decision-making along the state’s coastline.
